| home decor woes |
[May. 16th, 2008|10:01 pm] |
I've been doing the annual spring cleaning for the past few days. I always tell myself not to let things pile up, yet they always find their way to.
I'm adopting a new rule of doing tears from magazines I get, of things I like, and tossing the rest. I think that is my biggest issue (no pun intended) with my clutter. I just tossed out a bag of about 40 magazines and I still have a good 40 stacked on my desk right now. To be fair, they're mostly home decor mags which I'm using.
Another annoyance? Two of my lightbulbs blew out and someone borrowed the communal ladder and hasn't put it back yet. So right now my apartment is dim as hell.
As much as I would love to just revamp my entire apartment, I have to pace myself. Money is the main issue, considering I have a bunch of expenses coming up (Tattoos, trip back home with the girlfriend, trip to Paris with the girlfriend), right now I just have to make with what I have. I just need to make things clear because I have an issue with working in a messy environment: I just can't.
Today Carolina borrowed the clothes I made for the Nouveau Classical Project for an impromptu shoot. She said the model she used is the new Prada campaign model, though I'm not sure who it is, I can't wait to see some pics. I def will post when I get something. |

I want to send someone a text message that says:
I just wanted to give you my phone number.
So would it be:
J'ai juste voulu te donner mon numéro de téléphone?
Or is "just" too american. Does this work? |

| | She & Him - I Thought I Saw Your Face Today | ] | As I've never posted before, here's a brief intro: I'm Kristen, I'm 20, and I live in New Jersey, although I'm living in DC this summer, where I attend college. I've never actually posted on here because I never felt like I had anything interesting to say... but while I'm looking at my summer wardrobe and having read the previous post on '50s-style fashion, the subject of hippie style came up.
I feel like the late '60s- early '70s bohemian look is really appropriate summer: light fabrics, cheap thrift-store style, bright colors, flowers, peace signs, headbands, et cetera. I think the hippie philosophy really hits home in the summer as well: it's about freedom, love, being concerned about the environment and the state of the world. As a kid, I loved rocking tie-dye and peace signs while listening to the Beatles. Even now, when I save pictures on my computer for fashion inspiration, they tend to be very "hippie-ish". Warning: lots of pictures below the cut.

| Book Club |
[May. 15th, 2008|11:51 pm] |
Now that summer's here, I absolutely can not wait to start reading again, as I never have enough time to read when I'm in school...
I'm starting a book club with some of my best friends next month when I move into my new apartment. Our plans are to lounge around with wine and discuss good books once or twice a week. We're starting with Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, which we have all read before, but loved enough to read several times over.
Any suggestions for, ideas about, or thoughts on book clubs? Any good stories about book clubs? Any suggested reading material?

| First Impressions |
[May. 16th, 2008|12:30 am] |
I arrived in Whitesburg, Kentucky, the town of 1600 where I'll be spending my summer, around 11 this evening after two flights and a three hour drive from the nearest airport. On the drive, we passed towns called Leatherwood, Happy, and Redfox. One town had a caption on its "welcome to..." sign that said, "home of the [something] high school lady cougars, 1997 state basketball champions!" In other words, the most noteworthy thing about that town was that its high school's girls' basketball team won a tournament 11 years ago. The man I was driving with stopped just outside Letcher County, where Whitesburg is, to buy alcohol, because Letcher is a dry county (with the exception of restaurants in Whitesburg, which are allowed to sell alcohol as of April 2007). Then he dropped me by the house where I'm living. And by 'dropped me by' I mean, he opened the front door (without ringing or knocking), set my stuff down, and left me there in a dark house full of cats. As far as I could tell, the woman who owns the house was asleep, so I carried my stuff upstairs and started unpacking in what I hope to be my room. Two other Robertsons are here already, and they say in the five days since they've arrived they've exhausted every restaurant in the town and spent several evenings in the lone coffee shop. I asked if they thought I could be vegan here and they laughed, so it's probably going to vegan-lite this summer. Our fourth compatriot is arriving tomorrow afternoon and I may or may not be driving to Lynchburg, VA (yes it's really called that. It's Jerry Falwell's former homebase, if you must know) on Sunday for a three day documentary film shoot.
I'm absolutely as baffled about all this as I sound. |

hey cool cats!
i am just finishing up my freshman year in high school and likewise my first year of taking french - and i was wondering if anyone has recommendations for things i can do over the summer, to ensure i don't forget everything i've learned. my teacher suggested watching french movies to get a better grasp of how the language sounds when spoken, and it sounds like a good plan, but i was looking for something a little less passive too.
merci! |

| dictionnaire online? |
[May. 15th, 2008|07:09 pm] |
Salut,
I am looking for an online dictionary of sorts which provides me with the pronunciation of French words -- either through audio, or through a pronunciation key (i.e.: /ˈdɪkʃəˌnɛri/ dik-shuh-ner-ee). It does not need to be a translator site.
Merci! |

| | The Isrealites__Desmond Dekker | ] | Hi, my name is Andrea, I'm 21 and live in Adelaide, South Australia. I'd like to show you the styles I admire and aspire to.
(These are all pictures I had on my computer, so they don't necessarily show everything I love but I guess they give a fair idea. There are a lot of pictures but I tried to keep them fairly small because I know how it feels to have a slow connection)
My personal taste in style fluctuates between the glamour of classic Hollywood:

The simplicity of day to day wear of the 1940s in particular (but also the 1930s and 1950s):

And the exaggerated take on the 1950s in movies like Grease and Cry Baby:

( More More More ) I would love to dress the way those women did, everyday of my life and one day I hope to be able to achieve it. But if I don't I always have my old movies to look at.

| les amis? |
[May. 15th, 2008|01:36 am] |
Hi, I am Hannah and I was a member of this community a long time ago and I just rejoined! I took up to French 4 in high school and placed into French 304 during my freshman year of college (which was over a year ago). I stopped speaking the language almost completely and I would really like to gain back everything that I have lost. I don't think I've used the language much in about a year. So really, what is the best method here in regaining this? I had a pretty deep understanding of the language. I could have been almost fluent, I am sure. Now I barely remember most of the vocabulary I knew. I am not in school anymore and the community college in my town does not offer French so those options are not available. I would really like to start learning the language again before I go back to school next spring so hopefully I can place back into a higher level French. I would really like to have an email/IM pal that has a solid understanding of French. Really, any help is better than none. S'il vous plait? |

| Chinese cabbage? |
[May. 14th, 2008|09:41 pm] |
Other then this recipe for wanton soup does anyone have ideas for Chinese cabbage? I bought some in to replace babby Nappa in a soup recipe (Baby Nappa $3 vs Chinese cabbage $1) and now I've got about half left and no idea what to do with it. I want to try something other then soup.
Although worse comes to worse I might make some slaw |

| Chinese? |
[May. 14th, 2008|04:50 pm] |
I'm trying to translate a title of a book and I've already giving it to two of my friends who speak Japanese, but neither of them are sure about the last two kanji. They are pronounced 'ai byou' according to the furigana. Both friends are suspicious of the title actually being Chinese, even though the book is written in Japanese, since the story supposedly takes place in Shanghai.

(long-time lurker, first-time poster. this community is awesome!)
I have recently happened upon a bunch of fresh blackberries. I would love to make some sort of meal from these (salad, desert, etc) without having to heat them. I'd also prefer to keep them whole, if possible. does anyone have any ideas of what I could make? |
